Thoughts on Wednesday
Added: By ArielAnother day, another set of idle thoughts. This time about the Wednesday show on Netflix. I preface this by saying that I both like and dislike parts of the show (so despite being mostly negative, I do think I like the show overall), and that I don't have a deep knowledge of Addams Family lore (so I'm basing this on what I've seen of its extended universe).
- Various characters feel like they could have been casted or acted better.
- Wednesday herself is fine.
- Gomez feels dead. Part of this comes from the lack of diction from his actor. There's no energy from him.
- Fester feels like a Blues Clues host. I can't tell if this is the acting or the writing.
- Goody Addams' name is confusing. Anyone who's read The Crucible knows that "Goody" is a honorific like "Mr." or "Mrs.". This wouldn't be as much of an issue if it weren't for the setting they have her in. I've seen people say "The main character's name is Wednesday! Gomez is a surname! Morticia! None of their names make sense!". There's a difference between using a silly/nonsense name and using a name that seems actively confused with the setting. If Goody was from any other area or time period, it wouldn't be as much of an issue.
- The special effects and such for Thing were genuinely amazing.
- I like the snap-twice reference with the Poe statue.
- Enid's family's conversion camp thing was confusing. Was it meant to be a reference to gay conversion therapy? It felt like it was trying to, but Enid response of "I'll do it when I'm ready" broke that analogy.
